On the 31st of March 2020 Marriott International announced that it is notifying some of its guests today of a data breach incident involving a property system. Marriott believes there was Up to 5.2 million guests that may have been affected, are you one of them?

Marriott believes a section of the guests had some of the following information involved in the breach:

  • Contact details (e.g., name, mailing address, email address, and phone number
  • Loyalty account information (e.g., account number and points balance, but not passwords)
  • Additional personal details (e.g., company, gender, and birthday day and month)
  • Partnerships and affiliations (e.g., linked airline loyalty programs and numbers)
  • Preferences (e.g., stay/room preferences and language preference)

This is not the first time Marriot International has breached data. Back in 2019 the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) announced a plan to fine the US hotel group Marriott International £99.2m for a serious data breach. The following hotel brands were affected:

  • Aloft Hotels
  • St. Regis
  • Tribute Portfolio
  • Westin Hotels & Resorts
  • Element Hotels
  • W Hotels
  • The Luxury Collection
  • Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts
  • Sheraton Hotels & Resorts
  • Four Points by Sheraton
  • Design Hotels

Also included were the Starwood-branded timeshare properties.
